For rodeo enthusiasts in the area, the Terrebonne Livestock and Agricultural Fair Association (TLAFA) is putting on the second of its three-part Winter Series Rodeo, on Saturday, March 24.

The series will take place at the Houma Airbase Arena and starts at 7 p.m.

The first part of the series, scheduled for January, was postponed until April 14, due to inclement weather. The second part took place Feb. 24.

“This is a yearly event,” said Beth Lovell, rodeo chairman. “We have the Winter Series every year, and it’s gone on for 10 years now.”

Stacy Powell, TLAFA secretary, said this year’s Winter Series rodeos are dedicated to the memory of Andy Joe Dufrene, who died at age 21 in an automobile accident in Aug. 2006.

“Everyone is invited to wear purple, in tribute to him,” said Powell. “His family will be there selling T-shirts and hats, hoping to raise enough money to send one cowboy to bull-riding school and one cowgirl to Martha Josey’s barrel-racing school.”

Powell added that Dufrene rode with a number of rodeo organizations, including the Mid South Pro Tour, Tri-State Rodeo Association, Southeastern Bull Riding Series and the TLAFA.

Lovell said that the rodeo series includes all of the typical rodeo events such as barrel racing, bull riding, pole bending, calf roping, team roping, and more. “It’s got everything in it, including sheep riding for the little ones,” she said.

The sheep riding is limited to kids 7-years old and under.

For the event, Lovell said riders come from around the area. “We also have a lot that come from out of town,” she said. For the February rodeo, there were over 150 participants.

“If they place, they win money for each show,” explained Lovell. “Then we give awards out for the third show. They do have to participate in at least two events to be able to get an award (at the third show), if they qualify.”

Tickets for the rodeo are sold at the gate. Adult tickets are $8, while tickets for children 12-years and under are $5.

Children under 2-years old get in free.

The TLAFA is also hosting its monthly horse show at the Houma Airbase Arena, on March 4.

“In the morning we have our judged events, and then at noon, it starts our speed events,” said Lovell. “They have barrel racing, arena race, pole-bending, et cetera.”

Lovell said high-point ribbons for the top five placements are given out at the end of the day. “Then at the end of the year, we give saddles and buckles away.”
