What’s green, scary and sings?

Here’s a clue: We loved him on the big screen. And now we can enjoy him on the stage.

Everyone’s favorite ogre performs at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts in New Orleans this month in Shrek the Musical.

Slated to run May 31 through June 5, the play is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film that started it all.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a “short” temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand … and his name is Shrek.

The show features 19 all-new songs, laughs, dancing and breathtaking scenery. According to USA Today, the show is “all together irresistible. A big fat hit!”

The tour is part of Broadway Across America. Shows and prices vary, but tickets begin at $25. Curtain is at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday shows at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
