Do you have a child or consider yourself a child at heart? Looking for a way to have fun without melting in the summer sun?

Then the 10th annual Summer Fun Kids Day July 18 in Houma is just what you need.

The daylong indoor event kicks off at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 2 to 12 (youngsters under 2 are admitted for free) at the door.

Enjoy a day of interactive games, sports, pony rides, live nonstop entertainment with shopping (and freebies) from dozens of vendors with over 40 booths.

The Synergy Bank Stage offers live performers that will keep the kids entertained all day. There’s hip-hop dance troupers Rhythm & Soul, an inspiring improvisational theatre show by Frank Levy, magic by local favorite Frank Chiasson, singer Phillip Melancon putting his twist on your favorite songs and “Shrek” interpreted in three dance acts by Lenar’s Dance Company.

But wait, there’s more.

Singers Jordy Orusse (the reigning CenterStage singing champ) and nine-year-old twin sisters Lauren and Sarah Delhaye are slated to perform. Dancers from Kettie Babin’s School of Dance, Ballroom Dance & Fund with USA Dance and the Houma Conquerors’ Dazzling Dames Dance Team are also scheduled for afternoon performances.

Also watch for appearances by SpongeBob SquarePants and Curious George.

In addition to live entertainment, Summer Fun Kids Day has a Sports Corner, featuring a rock wall, penalty kick, batting for the fences and super hoops. There are also pony rides, and Bounce Alley includes a 180-foot inflatable slide and other bounce houses and slides.

A new feature this year is the Kiddie Break Room, a special place for children under age 2 to safely play while their parents take a break from the activities, and the Story Corner.

It is the event’s variety that has lead to its steady growth, according to Betsy Breerwood, marketing manager for the civic center.

“The event includes things that children of all ages can participate in, not just one age group,” she said. “There are just a wide variety of activities throughout the day that keeps people coming back every year.”

Last year, over 3,200 people attended the event. Breerwood said Kids Day is expected to draw about the same number this year.

Most of the games and activities at Kids Day are covered with the admission price, but some activities are booth vendors charge a nominal fee. Parents will find loads of information and the latest products for children.

And don’t forget to participate in the annual Scavenger Hunt. A special prize will be awarded to one lucky scavenger. Among the bigger ticket items up for grabs are a $500 Back-to-School Shopping Spree and a set of bicycles.
