Thursday, Oct. 6, 6:30 p.m., International Observe the Moon Night at the library. Children ages 8+ and their parents are invited to attend. Gene Dalton will give a 30- minute talk and slide show presentation about the moon. “How Far How Big” demonstration will give a visual reference to help understand the relation of the moon size to Earth. Materials to make a moon flip book will be provided. The program will end with a viewing of the moon through telescopes provided by the Astronomy Club of Houma that will be set up in the front of the library. In the event of cloudy weather, the program will be rescheduled for another date in the future.


Saturday, Oct. 8, Friends of the Library Annual Spelling Bee begins at 9:30 a.m. for 1st and 2nd grade; at 11 a.m. for 3rd and 4th grade; at 1 p.m. for 5th and 6th grade; and open competition begins at 2 p.m. Registration in the lobby starts 30 minutes before each contest. The fee for levels 1-3 is $1. Fee for the open completion is $2. Each participant will receive a certificate. First, second, and third place winners will receive a medallion. First place winners will also receive a $25 gift certificate. Main Library

Saturday, Oct. 8, 10:30 a.m., A special Man in the Moon storytime will be held for children ages 4 to 8 to celebrate the International Observe the Moon event. A special craft will follow the storytime.


Saturday, Oct. 15, 3 p.m., Lego Builders for 2nd to 6th graders meets to create original creations.

TEEN ACTIVITIES (6th, 12th GRADE)

*The American Library Association will celebrate Teen Read Week Oct. 16, 22, 2011. This year’s theme is Picture It @ Your Library. The purpose is to encourage more teens to take time to read for the fun of it. Studies show that students who read for leisure score higher on standardized tests. Terrebonne Parish libraries offer a wealth of books, audio books, magazines, graphic novels, e-books and more, and all you need is a library card to access them. A variety of activities are planned to allow teens a time to have fun being creative. They can visit their local library to see what’s new and interesting just for them!

Wednesday, Oct. 19, 6 p.m., Photography Know How will be presented by Tiffany McCullough. She will give a photography presentation and conduct a darkroom photography activity using pinhole cameras. She will present the evolution of photography through the years as well as show her body of work as a photographer. Tiffany will also show the teens how to manipulate photos digitally.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m., Need money for college? Have questions about TOPS and other scholarship programs? Our Financial Aid Workshop at the Main Library is a great place to start. Representatives from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance will describe and answer your questions about the TOPS program. Information will also be provided about local need and merit based scholarships, and participants will learn how to complete the FAFSA form required for most types of aid. Workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m, concluding with Q&A until 8 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 9, 2:30 p.m., Friends of the Terrebonne Public Library will sponsor the Annual Trivia Contest for individuals and teams at the Main Library. The individual contest with a registration fee of $2 begins. First, second, and third place winners will receive a medallion and a book bag. Immediately following, the team trivia contest will be held. Registration is $5 per team. This is a competition between eight 3-people teams. The winning team members will receive medallions and a book bag.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, 10 a.m., If you are interested in the history of a particular building or bit of property that was in your family in the Houma or Thibodaux area, Ronald Berger will present a lecture about local property records. Based on extensive research, Mr. Berger has created historic model displays of both towns with the help of Sandra Boudreaux that are on display in at the Main Library.
