Billboard’s Top 5

The week was April 4, 1964, and The Beatles were hot. Billboard’s Top 100 singles included a dozen songs by the Fab Four. More amazingly, John, Paul, George and Ringo held the Top 5 positions.

1. Can’t Buy Me Love

2. Twist and Shout

3. She Loves You

4. I Want to Hold Your Hand

5. Please Please Me

The remaining songs? No. 31: “I Saw Her Standing There”; No. 41: “From Me To You”; No. 46: “Do You Want to Know a Secret”; No. 58: “All My Loving”; No. 65: “You Can’t Do That”; No. 68: “Roll Over Beethoven”; and No. 79: “Thank You Girl.”

Toenails or Tonsils

BBC announcer Roy Williams reported on air that Ringo Starr had his toenails removed. He later corrected the mixup, noting the drummer’s tonsils had been taken out. “I misread the item,” he said of the faux pas. “It happens to all of us, and I bet Ringo is glad I’m not his surgeon.”

8 Minutes; 14 Words

“I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” off the aforementioned “Abbey Road” album, clocks in at eight minutes. The total number of words used during those eight minutes: 14. And six of those are in the title!

Famous Last Words

The Fab Four recorded 15 tracks during their Decca audition. They were told guitar groups were on the way out, and sent packing. Instead, Decca hired the Tremoloes, a local (cheaper) band. The decision is probably the single worst choice in history!

Dude, Where’s My License Plate?

Remember the white Beetle pictured on the infamous Abbey Road album? Its license plate – LMW 281F – was reportedly stolen numerous times after the album’s release. The car was finally sold at auction in 1986. The car netted 2,530 Euro – approximately $3,474.70 today.

Jelly Baby Battle

George Harrison was once hit in the eye with a Jelly Baby during a performance.

The guitarist told an interviewer that he liked Jelly Babies, leading fans to pelt the band onstage – sweets for their sweets. Ultimately, Harrison wrote a fan asking her to stop.
