With cold weather behind them, local farmers were able to get their produce ready for the spring. The bounty is among the items available at the Thibodaux Farmer’s Market, which is now open each Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m.

Shoppers take note: The market has moved from the downtown area to its new location, the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park.

According to Joyce Benoit, Thibodaux Main Street Farmer’s Market coordinator, the move allows more people to see what is going on in the area.

“So far, it has been a success,” she said. “We anticipate it being even more successful now that we have more visibility. St. Mary is a busy street so, hopefully, we will catch people’s eyes.”

The Farmer’s Market officially reopened May 10. It will run until either late July or early August, depending on the farmers, Benoit said. The market shuts down until late September or early October when the next crops arrive.

“It is seasonal, so we encourage people to come out while they can,” Benoit said.

The market was originally started to draw attention to the downtown Thibodaux area.

“It’s about the downtown revitalization program,” Benoit explained. “The Farmer’s Market was designed to bring people downtown. We do have quite a few people from Houma that come, as well as Morgan City. It’s a gathering place where people meet and have a cup of coffee.”

The market not only contains produce, but also handmade items. Vendors sell crafts, woodwork and sweets. And live musical performances and a petting zoo for the kids make Saturday outings ideal for the family, Benoit said.

Anyone interested in being a vendor is welcome to contact Benoit at (985) 448-1474.

“All we ask is that whatever they sell be homemade or homegrown,” she said.
