A jitterbug contest, foxtrot lessons and presentations of music from the 1940s – and food – are all part of a fundraiser to be held at Houma’s Regional Military Museum.

WWII period costumes and uniforms are encouraged for what organizers are billing as a “USO-style event,” and if you don’t have apparel that fits the bill the museum may have a uniform you can wear.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 15, at the museum, 1154 Barrow St. Tickets are $40 per person. Guests may bring their own alcoholic beverages. Hors d’oeuvres are included in the ticket price, as well as soft drinks.

Houma dancing school Studio 371 is co-hosting the event.

“DJ music will set the tone with tunes from the ‘40s,” said museum director CJ Christ. “There will be a free dance lesson, a jitterbug contest, a costume contest and a show with songs from the 1940’s and dance exhibitions.”

Attendees will be able to view the museum’s collection, which includes artifacts from any eras in U.S. military history, including the present time.

With men expected in uniforms or coats and ties, and women in “elegant evening attire” – or perhaps uniforms, too – the audience will be part of the show, Christ said.

Marena Pizzolatto, who is assisting with the arrangements, said the event  could become an annual affair. She noted that the date – Nov. 15 – is the weekend after Veterans Day.

“This is a fundraiser, but it is important as a way of honoring veterans as well,” she said.

Studio 371 director Ann Durocher said she’s been involved with plenty of fundraisers, but that working with Christ on this one has been a unique experience.

“I am learning more about the museum, the artifacts they have and the future they plan for this,” she said.

Christ said the money raised will figure heavily into its next boat restoration project. A “captain’s gig” from the destroyer John S. McCain – named for the father of the former presidential candidate and Arizona senator, is next on the list.

A captain’s gig is the vessel used to bring the captain of a ship to and from shore.
