Terrebonne General Medical Center is expanding its offerings of breast imaging technology, which will lead to more accurate, early detection of breast cancer in patients.

The hospital announced on Thursday it’s implemented 3D mammography and dense breast tissue screening with its Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS).

This 3D mammography uses a low-dose short X-ray sweep around the positioned brast with a “step-and-shoot” method, according to TGMC.

This removes the potential motion from the tube, which helps reduce blur, while making pictures clear. This, of course, allows doctors to better and more accurately detect any problem areas or cancer.

The ABUS is designed to improve the detection of breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue, enhancing consistency, reproducibility and sensitivity of the whole breast ultrasound.

According to the hospital, ABUS demonstrates a 35.7 percent improvement in cancer detection in women without prior breast intervention.

TGMC is the only facility in the Southeast with this technology.

“The implementation of these two technologies marks a significant step forward in helping our clinicians detect breast cancer,” said TGMC President and CEO Phyllis Peoples. “At TGMC, our goal is to provide our patients with the most effective ways to battle cancer from every possible angle with innovative procedures, medicines and technology.”
