Of course, seafood is king in South Louisiana. Locals love gathering around a boiler while waiting to enjoy some fresh crawfish, shrimp and crabs.

But if I had to put my money on what people enjoy down here the second most, it would be some good ole barbecue.

People are picky when it comes to their BBQ, as many feel they can do it just as good or better than most places can prepare for them. However, Houma’s Honest Abe’s offers delicious food that I believe any barbecue expert would enjoy.

My family and I visited the restaurant located at 693 Corporate Drive on Saturday night, just in time to see LSU secure the win over Alabama.

It’s a smaller space, but there’s plenty of room to eat, with booths along two walls, a couple of tables in the middle and four seats at the bar.

The menu has a decent amount of choices, but I ordered the brisket sandwich combo, which comes with two sides and a soda.

The brisket was tender, seasoned well and flavorful, and the sweet AbeSauce on top complemented the meat. The bun was prepared exceptionally well, too. It was toasted but soft and held the sandwich together nicely.

Already satisfied with my entrée and two sides (potato salad and house salad with ranch), I had to sample everything else that was on the table, being that it was my first time there — of course.

First the wings, which almost made me regret ordering the brisket sandwich as my meal. Each sauce I tried — AbeTomic, lemon pepper, Uncle Willie’s Sweet Heat and garlic parmesan —was sensational. The wings, which had the right amount of crisp, were packed with flavor and juicy.

The bone-in ribs were also calling my name. They were tender just like the above-mentioned meats and simply scrumptious.

The food at Honest Abe’s could go toe-to-toe with barbecue coming off a pit anywhere else.
