Junior Auxilary of Houma continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of the community’s children and they are offering a festive event for Mardi Gras that is safe for children with sensory issues.

Krewe of You will be held on Sunday, February 13, and offers an alternative Mardi Gras celebration for kids (and kids at heart) with sensory issues. JA of Houma Public Relations Chair Katie Portier said, “For a child on the spectrum or with sensory challenges, a traditional Mardi Gras parade can be very scary with its loud noises, bright lights, and big crowds. With Krewe Of You, families with sensory-sensitive children can enjoy Mardi Gras at their own pace.”

The event includes sensory-safe activities such as arts and crafts, games, king cake decorating, snacks, and a quiet, indoor parade. “The indoor parade is always a big hit!” Portier said, “We decorate wagons like floats and offer a fun chance to throw beads to the “crowd” of families and JA members, catch the beads, or both! In the past, families have really enjoyed this experience.” There is also “free play” where kids can have fun in a safe environment.

Krewe of You will happen at Kandi Lyn’s Cheer/ICE All-Star Gym, 2304 Coteau Road in Houma. Registration is required and can be completed here.  For further information and questions, contact Katie McDonald (985) 804-2032, Gypsy Pitre (985) 852-2855, or Jenna Boyd (985) 852-5282.
