Leadership Terrebonne 2023 has officially brought back community projects!

“Leadership Terrebonne has done some projects in the past, but overtime that went away–we wanted to reintroduce our projects again this year so that our groups can work to make a lasting impact on the community,” explained Karen Schilling with Leadership Terrebonne. “We divided the class up into four groups, and each one picked something in the community they wished to do and created a project to help out.”

One Leadership Terrebonne group created the project Rock Da Boot, with a mission to beautify the parish and educate young kids about coastal erosion and land loss in south Louisiana. The group visited several local schools and taught students how to preserve our coast –then each student was able to paint a rock in their own style, which were then brought to the new levee system in Cocodrie, LA.

“We partnered with Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District and identified a site along Highway 56 and Chauvin where we could allow these students to place their newly painted rocks to create a levee,” said Christian Bergeron, group leader. “We worked with about 180 students, so it wasn’t substantially large, but it’s a great start. We were happy to raise awareness while the students were able to help build a levee with their colorful rocks. We think this made a lasting impact.” Bergeron explained that the painted rocks were a beautiful addition to the levee, and the students who participated were very excited to see their painted rocks at work protecting the coast.

Rock Da Boot is not a one time project, either. “We have already had several other schools reach out to us and ask if their students can participate as well,” said Bergeron. “So I think this will be an ongoing project for the foreseeable future– which is not only great for our students, but for our coast too.”

Along with Christian Bergeron, members of the Leadership Terrebonne Rock Da Boot team were Rhett Lecompte, Andree Picou, Carla Cayette, Mike Palmer, Racquel Parfait, and Shane Robichaux. To watch a short video about the Rock Da Boot project, please click here.
