Congratulations to local student Benson Giroir, amateur wood carver, who recently won first, second, and third place in the Children’s Division of the Louisiana Wildfowl Carvers and Collectors Guild Championships. Giroir has only been carving for about two years.

“Benson is an exceptional student. He has a long attention span and really focuses on what he is doing,” said Gene Hebert, who teaches the wood carving class Giroir is a student of at the Terrebonne Folklife Cultural Center. “It isn’t hard to give him instructions– I can walk away and focus on other students and know that he is still going to do an excellent job.”

Giroir competed at the Louisiana Wildfowl Carvers and Collectors Guild Championships with four sculptures that he completed only within the last two years.

“Giroir is one of those kids who possesses a talent that no one knew he had,” said Anne Picou with the Terrebonne Folklife Cultural Center. “But it really became obvious when he started Mr. Gene’s class. It is a true treasure to see.”

Congratulations to Benson for his outstanding artistic accomplishment!
