The Krewe of Hercules kicks off Mardi Gras parades in Houma, taking to the streets on Friday, February 10, 2023, starting at 6pm. This year’s theme is “Hercules from the Heart.” King Hercules XXXVIII is Robert Lirette.

The krewe has 900 members, making them the largest men’s club in our area. This year there are 38 throwing floats, seven marching bands including South Terrebonne High School, H.L. Bourgeois High School, White Castle High School, Evergreen Junior High, Ellender Memorial High School, Lutcher High School, and Donaldsonville Sonic Boom Box.

This year’s Grand Marshal is Garrett Hartley. Hartley began his college career playing football at Oklahoma in 2004. After college, Hartley was signed by the New Orleans Saints on October 29, 2008. He became the placekicker for the New Orleans Saints in 2008. His first game as a New Orleans football player was on November 9, 2008 against the Atlanta Falcons. Hartley came out strong, booting 13 for 13 field goal attempts for the 2008 season. He set an NFL record for most consecutive successful field goals to start a career. Against the Washington Redskins, Hartley kicked four field goals, including the game winning kick in overtime that allowed the Saints to preserve their undefeated record. On January 24, 2010; he made a 40-yard field goal in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game to send the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl. He continued in the Super Bowl XLIV, going 3-for-3 with field goals of 46, 44, and 47 yards. He became the first kicker in Super Bowl history to convert three field goals of 40 or more yards.

The honorary Grand Marshal is the South Terrebonne 2022 Baseball Team. South Terrebonne captured its first LHSAA state baseball championship in school history during the 2022 season. In the playoffs, they beat Plaquemine in the first round, then Neville in the second. Next, they took care of South Lafourche in the quarterfinals. To get the ultimate prize, the only team that stood in their way was North Vermillion, the team that ended their 2021 season. The game, like their journey to that point, was a roller coaster. South Terrebonne won its first title with a 7-6 win against North Vermillion making them the 2022 Class 4-A State Champions.
