A stay in the hospital is rarely a time of comfort for the patient and his/her family.

But Thibodaux Regional Medical Center takes pride in doing its best to satisfy its patients.

And they have the trophies to prove it — 11 years and counting.

Thibodaux Regional won the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award for 2018, an honor which goes to only the top 5 percent of hospitals in the United States for patient experience and satisfaction.

Thibodaux Regional’s honor was its 11th-straight, which is arguably its sweetest one yet, because they now own the longest active streak of patient satisfaction in the state.

To celebrate the occasion, the hospital held a ceremony at its main entrance last Thursday. While there, Thibodaux Regional CEO Greg Stock said the occasion was worth celebrating — a testament to the hard work the hospital does to putting patients first.

“This is a great accomplishment for our team. There’s no question,” Stock said. “It’s hard to do, but we did it. And we’re very happy and very proud.”

At the ceremony, members of the Thibodaux Regional team, as well as a representative from Healthgrades shed light into what has gone into their success for the past 11 years.

Stock said the honor is fulfilling because as medical professionals, the No. 1 focus is on the patient at all times — getting them well and making sure they are comfortable in a trying time.

Maggie Foley with Healthgrades said that Thibodaux Regional excelled in every metric of the multi-pronged study, which released its results earlier this summer.

“You could see that a great team is in place here,” Foley said. “To be the only hospital in Louisiana to do this 11 years in a row, it says a lot.”

But perhaps, it’s testimonials from those who have lived it first-hand that spoke the loudest about the hospital’s mission and successes.

Wallace McCann spoke at the ceremony and told a tale of a near-death experience he had in the past year.

While working out at the Wellness Center, his heart stopped and emergency care was needed to save his life.

Medical staff responded to McCann right away and shocked his heart back to life. In the days and weeks ahead, he recovered under care provided to him by the team at Thibodaux Regional.

Today, months later, he’s able to live a normal life again.

McCann thanked several doctors and nurses who assisted him throughout this stay — even some who didn’t treat him directly, but who made it a point to visit him to check on his progress.

“They didn’t have to do that,” McCann said. “But I’m appreciative.”

He said Thibodaux Regional is a community gem — one which saved his life.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” McCann said. “There are so many options where I might not be standing here talking to you. This team of people here were primarily responsible for saving my life. There’s good people all over this staff. They exemplify what Thibodaux Regional’s passion for health care is all about.”

Fellow patient Chantelle Boquet agrees.

Boquet has an ailment, which requires her to constantly seek medical care and attention.

Over the past 11 years, she’s been in and out of Thibodaux Regional, joking that she has a roomed saved for her at the hospital called the “Chantelle Suite”.

She got emotional talking about hospital staff, saying that their tireless work to make her condition better is not forgotten.

“With teamwork, everyone accomplishes more,” Boquet said. “After all this time, the people here become my extended family. Each one of ya’ll is worth something. And you all mean so much to me.”

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Two other local hospitals were recognized and awarded the same honor by Healthgrades.

Terrebonne General Medical Center and Chabert Medical Center — both in Houma — were also given the award for 2018.
