An unlicensed 15-year-old from Cut Off lost control of the vehicle he was illegally driving Friday, slamming into a utility pole and killing his 17-year-old passenger, state police said.

The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. at La. Highway 308 and McCloud Road in Lockport, said State Police Troop C spokesman Master Trooper Bryan Zeringue.

Zeringue said the unlicensed teen failed to negotiate a left bank curve, drove his 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier off the northbound lane, over-corrected and veered off the lane a second time sending the car careening into the utility pole.

The driver was wearing a set belt and received only moderate injuries, Zeringue said. However, his passenger, Edward Domangue, 17, also of Cut Off, received fatal injuries despite being belted, the spokesman said.

Both teens were treated at Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital.

Although alcohol and drug use are not suspected factors in the crash, in accordance with state law blood was drawn for testing at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash, and charges are pending, Zeringue said.
