A 50-year-old Cut Off woman was killed when a driver crossed the center line on Louisiana Highway 308 in Cut Off last Tuesday and struck the SUV in which she was riding head-on, state police reported.

Cynthia Vegas was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Lady of the Sea Hospital in Galliano.

Vegas was a passenger in a 1997 Ford Escape, which was being driven by her niece, Shelly Curole, 44, of Golden Meadow, authorities said.

Curole was traveling north on La. 308 when a 2003 Ford F-150, driven by Gannon Estay, 30, of Des Allemands, crossed the centerline and struck her Escape head-on about a mile south of the Cut Off Bridge. State police said after impact, both vehicles spun clockwise and stopped in the roadway. The crash occurred around 1:10 p.m., troopers said.

Gannon, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing.
