The candidate pool for Nicholls State University’s next president is down to six.

The Nicholls State University Presidential Search Committee announced the semifinalists on Monday. The committee will meet with each of the candidates on campus in the coming weeks for interviews and interaction with university groups.

In alphabetical order, the semifinalists are:

– Allayne L. Barrilleaux, vice president for academic affairs at Nicholls.

– Karla V. Hughes, provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor at Morehead State University.

– James M. Limbaugh, chancellor at Montana State University-Northern.

– Mirta M. Martin, dean and professor of management at Virginia State University.

– Bruce T. Murphy, vice president for academic affairs at Air University.

– Carlisle Baxter Rathburn III, special assistant to the vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the Texas A&M University System and former president of CEO at Texas A&M University-Texarkana.

“We had a very strong pool of candidates, and I was impressed with the number of applicants who want this job and want to take this university forward, said search committee and board member Jimmie Martin, of Cut Off.

Interview schedules are still being finalized.

“We want to expose the campus to several candidates before we can determine who is best for Nicholls today,” search committee and board member Andre Coudrain, of Hammond, said.

The search committee will then deliberate on campus and determine the finalists to send before the UL System Board of Supervisors, who will make the final choice at a special meeting tentatively scheduled for Sept. 9 or 10 in Baton Rouge.

Stephen Hulbert retired July 31 after serving as the school’s president for 10 years. Larry Howell, the school’s executive vice president, is the interim president and is not a candidate for the long-term job.

R.H. Perry and Associates sought applicants and culled resumes from around the country. The consulting firm recommended 17 candidates from 46 applications and submitted their credentials to the presidential search committee last week.
