An 82-year-old Gibson man was arrested for Second-Degree Murder Thursday afternoon after he shot his 53-year-old nephew in the chest over a dispute, according to local authorities.

Robert Matthews was arrested after the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call at 1:16 p.m. in reference to a shooting at 6112 N. Bayou Black Dr. in Gibson. Reports say that Matthews shot his nephew, Rufus Turner Jr., whom he also shared a residence with.

According to reports, Matthews had called police earlier in the day to report Turner’s drug dealing. Turner came back to the residence to confront Matthews about the call, and authorities say as Turner entered the front door, Matthews shot.

The sheriff’s office said when deputies arrived on the scene, Turner’s body was lying face down in the front yard of the residence.

Captain Malcolm Wolfe, of the sheriff’s office, said Matthews had no previous criminal history, but Turner had a “pretty lengthy” criminal background in relation to drug dealings.

Wolfe added that Matthews was currently in a medical facility in the Terrebonne Parish Jail. “I’m not sure what his mental history consists of,” said Wolfe, “but he owned medications. We’re in the process of trying to figure out what he suffers from.”

Wolfe said he wasn’t aware of any prior calls from Matthews, only the Thursday morning report of Turner’s drug dealing.
