A Larose man attempted to swim away from police Wednesday night after he failed to elude arrest during a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle, a Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

A Golden Meadow officer initially clocked Shawn Paul Galjour, 34, 13328 West Main St., traveling at 50 mph in a 30 mph speed zone, said LPSO spokesman Larry Weidel. As the officer made a U-turn and turned on his emergency lights, Galjour sped away, crossing the Galliano bridge and continuing on La. 308.

Weidel said the man ran a stop sign and red light, topping speeds of 100 mph as he continued to flee toward Larose with the officer in pursuit.

When Galjour reached East 14th Street, he turned off the road and drove through a grass lot, stopping next to a two-story metal building, Weidel said. As the Golden Meadow officer pulled up and got out of his police unit, the Larose man jumped into Bayou Lafourche and began swimming across toward La. 1.

Weidel said the officer lost sight of Galjour as the man climbed out of the bayou and ran across the highway.

LPSO deputies patrolling La. 1 spotted Galjour and, after a short foot pursuit, arrested him. He consented to a field sobriety test, but refused to take the chemical test for intoxication, the spokesman said. Weidel said the Larose man was booked at the South Lafourche Substation.

As the Golden Meadow officers waited for a wrecker to haul Galjour’s vehicle from the field, dispatchers reported her car had been stolen. The description matched the vehicle the Larose man had abandoned. Weidel said.

Galjour was charged with DWI, aggravated flight from a police officer, various traffic offenses, theft over $500 and possession of Schedule III CDS. Weidel said he is being held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux in lieu of a $45,000 bond, which was set by state District Judge A. Bruce Simpson.

If convicted, Galjour faces up to 20 years in jail and a $20,000 fine.

Weidel said Galjour’s past criminal history includes drug, theft and resisting arrest charges.
