Bayou Pearls, an official interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, is partnering with Soles 4 Souls to host a Wearing Out Poverty shoe drive on Wednesday, June 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Terrebonne Parish Library-North Branch location.

The ladies of AKA will be accepting donations of gently used shoes, flip flops, sandals, and sneakers. Pairs will be accepted but are not required. The sorority is partnering with Soles 4 Souls to help provide essential items to those in need. “AKA partners with Soles 4 Souls in an effort to support their mission to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes around the world,” reads a statement from Bayou Pearls.

“The Bayou Pearls are super excited about the shoe drive and welcome the community to help them in their pursuit to make a difference in the world by “wearing out poverty”. This is a major global impact as the shoe donations will create opportunities for people in developing countries to start small businesses selling the donated shoes, generate income selling affordable shoes, provide direct assistance and disaster relief, along with protecting the environment by repurposing clothing items,” said Tonya S. Harris, President of the Bayou Pearls. “Misty Clement, Bayou Pearls Program Chair is working closely with our Target 5 Global Impact Committee to ensure that we are leaving international footprints worldwide.”

Soles 4 Souls is a Tennessee based non-profit organization whose mission is to provide shoes to people who need it the most. The organization collects, and distributes donated items to various programs around the world to help those in need. Donations for the shoe drive can be dropped off at the Terrebonne Parish Library- North Branch location in Gray,  from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15.
