Louisiana wildlife agents are investigating several recent illegal killings of black bears.

The killings have taken place from coastal bear habitat in St. Mary and Vermillion parishes. Authorities say the bears have either been shot or trapped in hog snares by poachers.

Killing a Louisiana black bear is a state and federal offense, carrying up to six months in jail and a $50,000 fine. A civil penalty of $10,000 per bear may also be imposed.

Authorities say anyone with information regarding the killings should call 1-800-442-2511. Cash rewards of up to $5,000 are being offered.
