The Houma Police and Houma Fire Department are trying to figure out the identity of a body found early Monday inside a burnt building on 1141 Roussel St.

According to fire inspector and investigator Michael Millet, firemen were called to the building late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Firemen initially thought the building was empty, but Millet said the body was located in a corner of the building after a search was conducted.

The cause of death for the body is not able to be determined at this time.

“We don’t know yet whether the death occurred in the fire itself,” Millet said. “That is still under investigation.”

The fire inspector said the body is believed to belong to a male, but more tests will be conducted throughout the week to get confirmation. Millet said because of how badly the body was burnt, the investigators do not know an age group.

The building where the fire occurred was abandoned for years, according to the fire department.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the investigation is ongoing.
