An allegedly armed suspect who had led police on an east Houma vehicle chase fell in a fusillade of gunfire from officers Monday morning, authorities have confirmed.

The dead man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was allegedly driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen when Terrebonne Parish deputies attempted to stop him somewhere on Grand Caillou Road, according to early accounts.

“There was one fatality,” said Trooper Evan Harrell, a Louisiana State Police spokesman. “We had joined in the pursuit to assist and we spiked the vehicle. There were no injuries on the part of the Sheriff’s Office or the troopers.”

Authorities said Houma police officers were also involved.

According to initial reports from multiple law enforcement sources, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to release information, the suspect drove through three sets of spike strips before bringing the vehicle he was driving to a halt on Woodlawn Ranch Road near La. Highway 56.

He was said to have exited the vehicle and brandished what appeared to be a handgun, they said, occasionally pointing it toward his own head, holding gathered officers at bay.

When the suspect, described only as a white male, pointed the gun toward officers, they fired.

Police sources said it is believed officers from all three agencies — TPSO, State Police and HPD — fired at the same time. A state police spokesman, Master Trooper Brooks David said the entire incident is under investigation by State Police and that he could not confirm which agencies’ officers fired. He did confirm that all three agencies were involved with the incident.
