A St. Charles Parish deputy was shot this morning while directing traffic in a school zone on U.S. 90 in Paradis, Sheriff Greg Champagne confirms.

The deputy, who has not been publicly identified, was “shot multiple times in an apparent ambush” Champagne said in a statement released by his office.”

The deputy was rushed to University Hospital in New Orleans. A suspect is in custody, Champagne’s statement says.

Two lanes of the four-lane segment of U.S. 90, near Louisiana Avenue, are shut down as of 10:45 a.m., motorists are advised to take alternate routes in possible.

The stretch of U.S. 90 where the shooting occurred is a main thoroughfare from Lafourche, Terrebonne and other Bayou Region parishes; deputies are regularly posted by St. Charles near at least two schools in the area in the mornings and afternoons to facilitate school bus traffic.
