All hands are reported safely evacuated from a platform fire in Breton Sound, the Coast Guard says.

Watchstanders at Sector New Orleans received a report at 2:50 a.m. Friday of a fire on board an oil production platform in Breton Sound Block 21.

“All 28 people aboard the platform were evacuated … and taken to Venice,” a statement from the Coast Guard says. “No injuries were reported.”

The well was shut in and production has ceased. The platform had an estimated 4,000 barrels of crude oil on board in storage tanks.

A Coast Guard overflight showed a 1.4 nautical mile rainbow sheen drifting southwest of the platform.

Initial response vessels are on the scene with additional vessels en route.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
