A local state senator says he won’t be among those seeking a U.S. Senate seat, despite expressions of support and speculation from area Republicans.

State Sen. Norby Chabert, R-Houma, said that while he appreciates the support of people who have said they will back him, that’s not going to happen.

“I don’t plan on running for the Senate,” Chabert said over the weekend. “A lot of people have encouraged me to do so, and I think it is indicative of the job I have been doing. I am happy to serve in the state Senate. I fully plan on filling out my term and then we will see from there. This has been the greatest pleasure of my life.”

Landrieu, who will seek her fourth term, is seen as one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate. But critics have said she is too closely aligned to Obama administration policies for their taste.

Two challengers have officially stepped forward so far, a retired Air Force colonel from Madisonville and a member of Congress.

Rob Manes, the retired colonel, is a Republican who has never sought public office before.

Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy has also announced. Like Manes, he cites support of Obama administration policies as a chief motivation.

The election will be held in 2014.
