Houma Police were called to Plant Road late Monday after a man kicked in his sleeping friend’s front door.

David D. Smith III, 37, 4833 Bayouside Dr., Chauvin, was arrested at 9:36 p.m. and charged with unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, according to department spokesman Lt. Todd Duplantis.

Smith and the 52-year-old man had been sitting outside the residence by a fire, talking and drinking alcoholic beverages, Duplantis said. The man told police that Smith left to go to a nearby convenience store to buy more alcohol. In the meantime, the man went into his residence and went to sleep, the spokesman said.

When Smith returned to the Plant Road residence, he began cursing and demanding a key to the front door, Duplantis said.

The man told Smith to leave because he was sleeping, according to police reports. At that point, Smith kicked the door three times, gaining entry on the final kick, Duplantis said. Smith reportedly ran up to the man and tried unsuccessfully to punch him. At that point, Duplantis said the man grabbed a machete and hit Smith.

At the residence, police noted the left side of the doorframe was damaged, the spokesman said. The machete, which was left lying on the floor by the front door, was recovered for evidence, Duplantis said.

When police found Smith, he had a five-inch cut on his left shoulder, the spokesman said. Acadian Ambulance transported him to Terrebonne General Medical Center for treatment. After he was discharged, he was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail.
