Modeled after Port Fourchon’s C-Port, a ground-breaking repair shipyard and logistics center is under construction in northern Rio de Janeiro, conceptualized by Galliano-based Edison Chouest.

Chouest spokesman Lonnie Thibodeaux announced the Brazilian development Monday, describing the planned operation as a “massive support base.”

The complex, which will allow Chouest to repair and service its vessels in the region, is at the Port of Acu, in São João da Barra.

In April, Chouest signed an agreement with Prumo Logistica, a Brazilian firm specializing in infrastructure solutions. The firm provides its port-related services through two critical Brazilian locations, Porto du Acu, where the Chouest project is being built, and Porto Sudeste in Itaguaí municipality.

The project, depending on the exercise of contract options, could cover an area of 574,200 square meters, Thibodeuax said.

“We are already investing to meet the current demand

of our international customers and new bids in the industry, and our unit at the Port of Açu is essential for such,” said Chouest Brazilian Director Ricardo Chagas. Construction work has been underway for “several months, “ a statement issued by Thibodeaux reads.

Operations are expected to begin during the first half of 2015.
