A Colfax man died Sunday when the car being driven by his cousin failed to negotiate a curve and sunk in a canal along La. 1 just north of Grand Isle, according to state police.

Trooper First Class Rodney Hyatt said Harry Watkins Jr., 20, was pronounced dead at Lady of the Sea Hospital shortly after the accident.

The crash occurred at approximately 4 a.m., when Tommy Watkins, 27, of Lockport, failed to make a right curve along La. 1 and his car left the road and overturned in a canal, Hyatt said. The 2004 Chrysler 300 the men were riding in came to rest on the bottom of the canal, he said.

Tommy Watkins received minor injuries and refused treatment, Hyatt said. South Lafourche Ambulance transported his first cousin to the hospital where he later died, the trooper said.

Both men were wearing their safety belts, according to state police.

Tommy Watkins agreed to a voluntary alcohol breath test, the results of which were .025g%, which is below the legal limit, Hyatt said.

Trooper Kevin Resweber is investigating the crash and charges are pending, Hyatt said.
