The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is taking self-defense to the next level with its “Unleash the Power” program.

Set to begin March 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s training academy (751 Goode St. in Thibodaux), the session is split into two sections. The morning consists of defensive techniques and use of chemical spray; come afternoon, the focus turns to using personal Taser devices – complete with demonstrations.

The course also covers the law and information related to carrying a concealed handgun.

“These classes contain some of the key components of our already successful RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) classes and much more,” Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said in a release. “We want to do what we can to help the women of this parish protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations.”

The fee for the course is $15. Participants must register by noon on March 19. Call Deputy DeAnn Barrios at (985) 449-4490 to register or for more information.
