1 dead, 1 injured in Lafourche after vehicle flips

An 18-year-old Houma driver lost control of his vehicle Monday evening in Lafourche Parish, killing him and injuring his 16-year-old passenger, state police reported.

Billy Tyson was speeding in a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse as he traveled east on La. Highway 182 when his car veered onto the rocky median, flipping several times before the car came to a rest on its roof in the westbound lane of traffic, LSP Troop C spokesman Trooper Evan Harrell said. The crash occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Tyson was pronounced dead at the scene, Harrell said.

The Houma teen traveling with Tyson received minor injuries and was rushed to Oschner St. Anne General Hospital for treatment.

Harrell said the investigation is ongoing, and routine toxicology test results are pending. The trooper said speed is a suspected factor in the crash. Both teens were wearing seat belts, he said.

“Drivers must obey all posted speed limits,” he said in a printed statement. “While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.”

Hunt for driver in hit-and-run fatality continues

Louisiana State Police continue their search for the driver responsible for the Nov. 10 hit-and-run death of a 41-year-old Baton Rouge man riding on La. Highway 3185 near La. Highway 1.

Karey Authement was riding a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle westbound shortly before 8 a.m. when a blue early 2000 model Chevrolet Z71 failed to yield as the Baton Rouge man attempted to turn left into a private driveway, authorities said.

In an attempt to avoid the truck, Authement tipped the bike to its side, sliding along the road. State police said, in the process, the truck rolled over the motorcyclist.

Witnesses saw the truck flee the seen, traveling south on La. Highway 1.

Authorities said Authement was wearing an approved Department of Transportation helmet, but sustained serious injuries. Acadian Ambulance rushed him to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. Authorities said he was later flown to University of New Orleans Medical Center, where he died.

The investigation is ongoing. State police said it was unknown if alcohol or drug use contributed to the incident.

Houma city court arrest roundup jails 6

The Houma Police Department has nabbed six people who were wanted for various crimes this week – all part of an outstanding warrant roundup conducted in the city.

HPD said the mission of the sweep was to “locate, arrest and transport to Houma City Court, those with active misdemeanor warrants.”

To execute the roundup, authorities said that HPD officers were paired into two and three man teams. Outstanding warrants were looked over by each officer in an effort to collaborate details and to gather information regarding whereabouts, addresses and associates of those wanted.

HPD said prior arrangements were made with the Houma City Court to have the court room opened and manned by marshals for 5 a.m. the day of the sweep.

A total of six people were arrested in the roundup. They are listed below:

Sherry S. Mobley, 45, of Oak Street. She is charged with driving under suspension and seat belt violation.

Dennis P. Naquin, 28, of Laban Ave. He is charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Torline Smith, 25, of East Street. She is charged with disturbing the peace and theft.

Jason A. Williams, 28, of Armour Drive. He is charged with issuing worthless checks.

Anthony Smith, 33, of Cypress Street. He is charged with failure to pay fine for seat belt violation.

Kayla K. Smith, 18, of Mariette Place. She is charged with speeding and no driver’s license.

Suspect arrested after leading high-speed chase

An estranged boyfriend allegedly stole his ex’s vehicle and led the Houma Police Department on a high-speed chase.

He is in custody after the chase ended with the vehicle crashed into a garbage can.

The Houma Police Department announced this week that it received a call on Nov. 27 from a female who stated that her estranged boyfriend had her vehicle and was refusing to give it back.

The victim said she was following the suspect, Jermaine Netters, 28, of 330 American Boulevard, near Williams Ave.

Authorities said that once in the area, they located the vehicle – a blue Crown Victoria – traveling on Williams Street against traffic.

When they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, authorities said Netters pushed the vehicle at a high rate of speed at rates of speed near 80 mph. During the chase, HPD said Netters disobeyed various traffic signals and almost caused several accidents.

Once on Main Street, Netters turned the car onto Banks Street where the chase ended because the vehicle struck a garbage can.

Netters ran from the vehicle and led officers on a foot-chase through several yards before being taken into custody.

The suspect is charged with one count of aggravated flight from an officer and one count of simple criminal damage to property. Upon arrest, authorities said they learned he also had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines and cost on a charge of simple battery.

Suspects sought in Larose quarter barge burglary

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced this week that a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible for the burglary of a quarter barge in Larose.

LPSO authorities said the burglary took place last week on the barge, which is docked in Bayou Lafourche alongside La. Highway 308 near East 11th Street.

LPSO spokesman deputy Brennan Matherne said the burglary was reported last Monday when the owners first noticed damage to a door and window within the barge.

Authorities said a laptop and a safety fire axe were stolen in the burglary, but several items were damaged in the break-in, including a large-screen, high-definition television.

Webre said anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Bayou Region Crime Stoppers at 1-800-743-7433.

Information leading to an arrest could make one eligible for a $1,000 reward.
