3-car head-on collision claims Montegut woman

A 70-year-old Montegut woman was killed last Tuesday night after a motorist driving a stolen vehicle attempted to pass in a restricted zone and hit her vehicle head-on. State police said the crash happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. on La. Highway 659, just north of La. Highway 3087.

Troop C spokesman Trooper Evan Harrell said Gregory Poindexter, 32, of Houma, attempted to pass a Camry in a no-passing zone when he collided head-on with an oncoming 2004 Ford Focus, which Lindy Bascle was driving. The impact sent the stolen Maxima rotating counterclockwise back into the Camry he initially tried to pass, Harrell said.

Poindexter was not wearing a seat belt, Harrell said. He received only minor injuries and was treated at Terrebonne General Medical Center. The driver of the Camry, Terri McKever, 18, of Houma, also suffered minor injuries and was treated at TGMC.

Harrell said Bascle was not wearing a seat belt. The Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at the scene.

Around the time of the crash, Houma Police were investigating the theft of a 2000 Nissan Maxima at the Blue Diamond Lounge on Main Street. The owner of the Nissan told police the car had been involved in a crash on La. Highway 659, the trooper said.

Blood results from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab are pending, Harrell said. State police suspect Poindexter was under the influence of alcohol. Routine toxicology tests are also pending for Bascle and McKever, although state police do not suspect either consumed alcohol prior to the crash.

Meanwhile, Poindexter is facing vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injuring (two counts), passing in a no passing zone, no seat belt and no driver’s license charges, as well as one count of theft of a motor vehicle.

34-year-old arrested on drug charges

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office announced this week that a New Iberia suspect has been arrested on multiple drug-related charges.

SMPSO officers said they were patrolling Amelia at 11:56 p.m. on Dec. 6 when they observed a vehicle that failed to use a turn signal at the intersection of La. Highway 182 and Duhon Bypass Road.

After conducting a traffic stop, authorities identified the passenger as Chesity DeBlanc, 34, of 400 Darby Lane, New Iberia.

Once pulled over, authorities observed marijuana and a digital scale in DeBlanc’s possession.

The suspect was transported to the parish jail on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of justice.

Suspect nabbed in St. Mary after public’s tips

A 28-year-old suspect is in custody of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office this week after authorities said they received multiple tips from the public that led to an arrest.

SMPSO authorities said that at 9:56 a.m. on Dec. 2, Brianell Sharard Wilson, 28, of 115 Friendship Alley, Amelia, turned himself in on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor.

Authorities said the suspect was featured in the Daily Review’s “Most Wanted” series on Nov. 30.

Following the article, SMPSO authorities said they received multiple tips regarding Wilson.

Once aware of the warrant, authorities said Wilson turned himself in, where he now is held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said he thanks the public for its awareness in this case.

Task Force takes down mid-level meth dealer and associates

Eleven people – including a mid-level methamphetamine dealer – are facing drug-related charges as a result of an 18-month, multi-agency investigation.

Lafourche deputies arrested David LeBlanc, 48, of 259 New Haven St., Raceland, whom they identify as the mid-level dealer. Ten other people have been arrested and charged with drug-related crimes, Lafourche Parish sheriff’s spokesman Brennan Matherne said.

Agents visited LeBlanc’s residence last Tuesday in an attempt to arrest him on warrants for distributing meth, Matherne said. LeBlanc was taken into custody outside his home without incident.

Inside the home, agents executing a search warrant found drug paraphernalia, suspected marijuana and meth, as well as 34 firearms, the spokesman said.

LeBlanc was jailed at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges, as well as illegally carrying a weapon in the presence of a CDS. He remains jailed in lieu of a $160,750 bond.

Prior to this week’s arrests, Ricky Trosclair, of 2861 La. Highway 1, Raceland, was arrested in October in connection to this investigation. He was charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, distribution of methamphetamine, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving under suspension and resisting an officer.

Kacy Lynn Dufrene, 33, of 221 Central Lafourche Drive, Raceland, was also arrested in the investigation and charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Webre commended everyone involved for bringing the people to justice.

“I want to thank the Louisiana State Police, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Dept. of Probation and Parole who all cooperated and worked with us during this investigation,” Webre said. “I also want to congratulate our Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force for another outstanding job.”
