Scam circling Thibodaux

Thibodaux Police Chief Scott Silverii sent out a news release this week warning citizens about a scam that has been circling the city’s streets.

According to the release, the scam usually plays out with the following plot: A person receives a call from someone claiming to be with Entergy. From there, the caller then says that the person’s power is going to be cut because they owe money. They then attempt to coax over-the-phone payments to get the power restored.

Silverii urges citizens to not give out their information through the phone, because this is a scam.

If this happens, the police chief urges you to hang up the phone and then call Entergy at 1-800-368-3749. If one legitimately owes the power company, they will be able to take care of the debt through that number.

Authorities investigating shooting in Schriever

An 18-year-old was shot in the back of the head this weekend while riding his dirt bike on Bull Run Road in Schriever.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident to see if charges need to be filed.

Terrebonne Parish Jerry Larpenter said that on March 15 at approximately 7:32 p.m., authorities were called regarding a shooting at a field on the 2100 block of Bull Run Road in Schriever.

Authorities arrived on the scene and located the victim, learning that he was shot in the back of the head while riding his dirt bike.

Acadian Ambulance took the victim to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he got medical attention. Authorities said the victim had successful surgery to remove the bullet from his head, and the victim is expected to make a complete recovery.

During investigation, authorities learned that this field is a common area where people go to shoot shotguns for practice. Because of that, authorities believe the shooting may have been an accident.

Detectives interviewed residents who live in the area of the incident, but no one has been able to identify a suspect responsible for the shooting.

Larpenter said the case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the TPSO at 985-876-2500.

Gambling complaint leads to gun arrest in Houma

A 20-year-old previously convicted felon is now facing guns charges after a gambling complaint was made to the Houma Police Department.

On March 14 at approximately 6:37 p.m., HPD responded to the 600 block of Hobson Street in reference to gambling and drug use.

Upon arrival, officers located six subjects in the area, detaining each and issuing summons for gambling.

But while investigating, authorities learned that Diquan Woods, 20, of Polk Street, was found to be in possession of hydrocodone pills and a black handgun. Authorities also learned that Woods was a convicted felon.

Woods was arrested and charged with gambling, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of hydrocodone and possession of a firearm with narcotics present.

Woods was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where he awaits trail or bond. The pills and gun were taken as evidence.

Lockport couple arrested on burglary and drug charges

A Lockport couple is facing charges this week after they allegedly burglarized a Raceland restaurant earlier this winter.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office authorities said that on Jan. 14, detectives were called to the Dairy Kool restaurant, located at 3821 La. Highway 1 in Raceland in reference to a burglary. Authorities investigated the scene and learned that a safe was stolen from the business. Upon looking into the case, authorities identified Jai Fonseca, 24, and Cassondra Rodrigue, 33, both of 1215 Ethel St., as suspects.

Through a separate investigation, agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force had obtained arrest warrants for the couple for distribution of marijuana.

Last Wednesday while conducting surveillance in the Lockport area, agents observed Fonseca driving along Church Street and made contact with him. The suspect voluntarily consented to a search of his vehicle, wherein agents located a small amount of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The agents then proceeded to Fonseca’s residence and obtained a search warrant, which yielded several partially smoked suspected marijuana cigarettes and more drug paraphernalia. Authorities also discovered a small amount of methamphetamine and another drug only attainable by prescription, both of which were determined to belong to Rodrigue, who was at the residence with two young children.

Agents placed both suspects under arrest and took them to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on the above-mentioned marijuana charge and also possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of persons under 17.

Rodrigue is charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a legend drug.

Upon questioning, authorities were able to charge both with simple burglary for their alleged role in the restaurant break-in.

Both suspects are being held in lieu of a $43,500 bond.
