Tuesday morning’s patrol turned harried when K-9 Deputy Simon Besson turned down East 23rd Street in Larose.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s deputy spotted a red Toyota truck turn down a driveway, back out, and then proceed down the street with its headlights off, said sheriff’s office spokesman Larry Weidel. When Besson activated his emergency lights, the truck sped away-lights off-onto La. 308, he said.

During the attempted get-away, the truck ran passing vehicles off the road and sped through a red light until it reached East 37th Place, Weidel said. Besson saw someone throw a plastic bag from the vehicle, which other responding deputies retrieved.

Weidel said the truck stopped at 262 East 37th Place and deputies ordered the driver and two passengers to exit the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Kevin Posey, 32, of 262 East 37th Place, Cut Off. His passengers were identified as Joshua Verdin, 18, of 400 East 37th Place, and Audie Cheramie, 38, of 343 East 37th Place, both of Cut Off.

Deputies found a partially smoked marijuana cigarette inside the plastic bag that was retrieved, Weidel said. Another “roach” or partially smoked marijuana cigarette was found in Cheramie’s pocket, he said.

All three subjects had the strong odor of alcoholic beverage on their breath, the spokesman said.

Another marijuana cigarette was found inside a pack of Marlboro cigarettes in the truck bed, and there were three opened cold cans of beer in the cup holders of the truck, Weidel said.

All three subjects were transported to the South Lafourche sub-station.

Cheramie and Verdin were both charged with possession of marijuana and violation of the open container law. There were issued citations and released, Weidel said.

While in custody, Posey requested to use the bathroom and the deputy who escorted him to the bathroom saw him throw a pack of Zig Zag rolling papers in the toilet, the spokesman said. He was returned to the bench and handcuffed.

Posey was charged with DWI; stop sign violation; red light violation; aggravated flight; open container; possession of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Bond was set at $10,000 by state District Judge John LeBlanc.
