The state Department of Transportation and Development begins its fall staffing schedule next month for toll collections on the Leeville overpass.

While toll booths are now staffed on a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week basis, toll takers will work only during peak driving hours.

Motorists traveling late at night or in the early morning will be required to use the automated toll machine at the overpass entrance to pay the bridge toll. A “Help” feature on each of the collection machines is designed to link those who experience problems with the machine to DOTD personnel.

According to Henri Boulet, executive director of the LA1 Coalition, toll takers will man the booths during shift changes at Port Fourchon.

He also noted DOTD intends to monitor traffic patters through the week and adjust the toll collection process as needed.

In addition, the LA1 Coalition asked DOTD to expedite a safety assessment of the intersection of La. Highway 3235 with the Larose Link connector road (La. Highway 657) after numerous accidents at the intersection. DOTD acknowledged that the safety review of the intersection is under way and said the department will advise the coalition of the findings, which could include the installation of flashing caution lights or a stop sign.

The review is expected to begin this week.
