An abandoned wallet, left behind when its owner ran from the car to escape arrest, helped Thibodaux Police get their man late Tuesday.

Louis Jacobs, 36, of 210 St. Charles By-Pass Road, Thibodaux, was identified by the officer from whom he fled, according to a police report.

Police first encountered Jacobs at Plantation Road and South Barbier Street where the Thibodaux man allegedly ran the stop sign. When a nearby officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, Jacobs ignored the emergency signals, authorities said. With the officer behind him, Jacobs continued to run stop signs and commit other traffic infractions while trying to get away.

When Jacobs unexpectedly slammed onto his brakes, the Thibodaux Police officer collided with the back of the Jacobs’ vehicle.

According to police, Jacobs got out of the car, looked directly at the officer and then ran away.

A search of the car turned up Jacobs’ wallet on the front seat. Inside, police found his Louisiana identification card. Next to the wallet, police found an open bag containing marijuana.

While police were still on the scene, Jacobs contacted the Thibodaux Police to report his vehicle had been stolen, authorities said. The dispatcher advised Jacobs to turn himself in. He refused.

Police later arrested Jacobs at his home.

He was charged with two counts of disregarding a stop sign and failure to give turn signals, and one count each of criminal mischief (filing a false report), driving under suspension, reckless operation, flight from an officer, switched plates and felony possession of marijuana. Police also learned Jacobs was wanted in Terrebonne Parish for traffic violations.

He was also issued a barment notice prohibiting him from returning to any Housing Authority property.
