Earlier this month it was idle talk, mostly.

But the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is having a special meeting Thursday at 9:30 a.m. to consider when the brown shrimp season should be open.

Depending on biological samples of shrimp the season usually opens sometime between the first week in May — it has been that early — to later in the month.

But commissioners got a heads up at their regular April meeting of the potential.

A date can be set when half of sampled shrimp are bigger than 100 to the pound. In recent years shrimpers have complained because the shrimp seem to be getting bigger earlier, but their seasons have not reflected that.

So especially for smaller boats, a crop can be lost before they ever get to go after it. Or, if an early enough date is chosen for the season’s start, the little guys may get a better break.

Anyone who wants to attend can go to the Commission’s meeting room at the LDWF headquarters in Baton Rouge, at 2000 Quail Drive.
