Former educator Martin Edlefsen and cardiologist Dr. Carolyn Hebert are the newest members of E.D. White Catholic High School’s Hall of Fame.

The two were officially inducted at a ceremony Sunday at Envie Restaurant.

Edlefsen – commonly called “Mr. Ed” and “Mr. Marty” – joined E.D. White’s staff in 1972 fresh off a nine-year radio career. The Ithaca College graduate taught English and speech, moderated a number of drama productions and started the Teens for Life Club at the school.

He was named the school’s first director of Development in 1981.

“Mr. Marty helped prepare for tomorrow so all students could have a better future,” said David Boudreaux, school president.

In the director role, Edlefsen helped raise money for the student union and Menard Hall, as well as other improvements made over the years.

Ironically, it was Edlefsen who, with the E.D. White Alumni Association board, created the school’s Hall of Fame in 1983. Beginning with the Class of 1934, the alumni board annually hosts a Homecoming dinner for its 50-year graduates.

Edlefsen remains active in the community, serving as a lector at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, as well as a member of the Terrebonne-Lafourche Right to Life Organization, the Rotary Club, Lafourche Parish Council and FOCUS, which is a marriage preparatory class.

Edlefsen is married to Ida Savoie from Belle Rose. The couple’s two children, the Rev. Frederick and Kirsten Edlefsen, are both E.D. White graduates.

The second inductee, Hebert, began her association with the school as a mother of six, all of whom attended E.D. White.

A New Orleans native, Hebert graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School and, four years later, the Dominican College (magna cum laude). She went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine degree at Louisiana State University’s School of Medicine.

She has practiced cardiology in the Thibodaux area since 1971.

Herbert and her husband, Leo Jr., were quite active at E.D. White during their children’s time at the school. She was a member of the Mothers Club and the Band Boosters Club. She has also been a parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas in Thibodaux for 20 years.

Active civically and in the medical community, Hebert is a member of the Nicholls State University Regional Committee, the advisory boards for Argent and Citizens banks and is a former president of the Cardinal Key Society. She is a member of the Lafourche Parish and Louisiana State Medical Societies, the American Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Heart Association, for which she served on the Educational Board.

Hebert has also held a number of positions at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, including director of the Intensive Care Unit, the Cardiology Department and the Rehabilitation Center. In 1988, she was the facility’s chief of staff.

Hebert’s honors include membership in the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society, the Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Who’s Who in American Colleges.
