Terrebonne detectives are investigating a shooting that left a Schriever man dead from a bullet wound to his neck.

The body of Jarrett Michael Scott, 21, was found beneath the carport of his residence Sunday. Acadian Ambulance arrived on the scene, but Scott was pronounced dead after attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.

The suspect, British James, 20, also of Schriever, admitted to the shooting, which was the result of a physical altercation over a cigar, according to Maj. Euia Usie of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrested James for disturbing the peace and second-degree murder. James was transported to Terrebonne Parish Jail, where he was booked and incarcerated.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Scott and James were involved in a fight next door to Scott’s residence on Louisiana Highway 311.

James said he was beaten by Scott and two other individuals during the altercation.

Minutes after James left the scene, he returned and shot Scott, who ran back to his residence before collapsing underneath his carport.

James has an arrest record for failing to appear in court on possession of marijuana and speeding charges.

Scott had previously been arrested on speeding charges, disturbing the peace, misrepresentation during booking, domestic-abuse battery, telephone harassment and possession of narcotics.

“If I had looked at their rap sheets before (the incident), I don’t think I would have picked any of these guys to be a murderer,” Usie said.

Sunday’s murder brought Terrebonne Parish’s 2007 total to six.
