A Morgan City fishing tournament has donated $4,000 to Nicholls State University to aid development of degree programs in the university’s Department of Petroleum Engineering and Safety Management.
The Morgan City Fishing Rodeo’s donation was announced last week.
“The program provides a true benefit to the oil and gas industry,” said Joey Cannata, a representative with the fishing rodeo, in a printed statement. “Our goal was to generate camaraderie and continue to support these kinds of programs that create progress in our industry.”
Petroleum Engineering and Safety Management, founded in 1973, is one of the fastest-growing programs on campus, the university said. One hundred sixty new students are enrolled for the fall semester, bumping total enrollment to 400.
“We have thousands of graduates working in the oil and gas industry across the globe,” the program’s Executive Director Michael Gautreaux said. “We pride ourselves in providing higher education opportunities for nontraditional students working in the industry.”
Graduates frequently find themselves in safety, drilling and production management positions, Nicholls reports. The program adjusts with the deep-water oil and gas industry, the driver of the Tri-parish economy.
