A Florida man was critically injured as he crossed La. 1 in the Leeville community Wednesday evening, state police reported.

Jerry Key, 55, of Youngstown, Fla., was stuck by a southbound SUV as he attempted to cross the highway near Boudreaux’s Motel, where he was staying. According to state police, Key was headed to Griffin’s Marina when a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Shelly Morris, 40, of Grand Isle, hit him.

Lafourche Ambulance Service rushed Key to Lady of the Sea Hospital and, later, to Oschner Hospital.

State police said Morris was uninjured in the incident. She was wearing a safety belt.

Morris submitted to a voluntary breath test, troopers said. The results of the test were .000g percent.

State police are unsure if Key had been drinking; however, blood was drawn and forwarded to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge for analysis.

The investigation is ongoing, but no charges are currently pending, according to state police.
