Having served as Terrebonne Parish Sheriff 22 years of his 32 year law enforcement career, many area residents thought Jerry J. Larpenter would complete his work in that spot.

However, in 2007 Larpenter resigned his position to run for parish president against then political newcomer Michel Claudet. After losing that race to Claudet, Larpenter departed from public view as his former number two man, Vernon Bourgeois ran for and secured the office of sheriff.

Earlier this month, Bourgeois announced that he would not run for re-election as sheriff. To this, Larpenter stepped in and announced that he would like to again wear the badge.

“I never lost the desire for public service to this parish and its people,” Larpenter said in a printed statement.

The former sheriff said that he had been approached by many people wanting him to return to office. He said he intends to run on his past record which includes work with public schools, establishment of the DARE program and establishment of a water patrol and narcotics division.

“I also have to point out that the inmate work program I began and which has saved the taxpayers of this parish million of dollars will be continued and expanded,” Larpenter said.

“As sheriff I have shown that I know how to manage a budget and will make the sheriff’s office live within its means,” Larpenter said. “That is a fiduciary responsibility I take very seriously.”

Larpenter could not be reached by press time to answer detailed questions regarding his bid for the badge.
