Funeral services, with full military honors, were scheduled Wednesday for a Louisiana soldier killed last week in Iraq.

Sgt. Jay Ryan Gauthreaux, 26, died Dec. 4 in Balad after a roadside bomb exploded near the vehicle he was patrolling in, the U.S. Department of Defense and officials at Fort Hood, Texas, said.

Gauthreaux joined the military in May 1998 as a signal support system specialist and was assigned to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division in 1999. He had already served a tour in Iraq, family members said, and was redeployed there in October.

Dalena Kanouse, a spokeswoman at Fort Hood, said Gauthreaux’s decorations included the National Defense Service medal, Army Good Conduct medal, Global War on Terrorism service medal, Global War on Terrorism expeditionary Medal, an Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action badge.

Services were to be held at noon at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Vacherie, with burial to follow in the church mausoleum.

Gauthreaux’s survivors include a 4-year-old son, Devin. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a special fund set up for the child at First American Bank in Vacherie.
