The Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo (GMFTR) announces its 72nd annual fishing rodeo July 1 – 3, 2021.

“We are excited to move forward with the 72nd Annual Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo while ensuring that it is done in accordance with all safety guidelines! Both local residents and participants throughout the Gulf Coast are ready for this event as the pandemic restrictions have been eased over the last couple of months.”, said GMFTR President Eddie Callais.

Each year the GMFTR brings with it the uniqueness of its Admiral, and this year is no different. We are happy to announce Mr. Michael Melancon as the Admiral of the 72nd Annual Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo.

Mike is a resident of Cut Off, Louisiana. He is the son of the late John “Johnny” Melancon, Sr. and Audrey Melancon. Mike is married to Annie Melancon and has five children, Vanessa (Pierce), Lauren (Guidry), Michelle, Johnette and Cameron and seven grandchildren.

Mike was born and raised in Lafourche Parish where he discovered his love for hunting and fishing. He and his wife Annie raised their five children in this community and built a successful business, Offshore Liftboats, which their daughters Vanessa and Lauren operate alongside them today.

The Melancon Family has a long history with the GMFTR. Mike’s father served as the 51st admiral in 1997 and his brother, John, Jr., served as the 64th Admiral in 2012.

Mike and his family partnered with the rodeo a few years ago with the Offshore Liftboats Blue Collar Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded by GMFTR officials and the Melancon family to a South Lafourche High School graduating senior that is not pursuing a university education. The recipient may use the scholarship to purchase necessary tools and supplies to begin a career immediately after high school or to assist with vocational school expenses.

In addition to the Blue Collar Scholarship, Mike and Annie also created the Johnny Melancon Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to a local graduating senior attending a university. This scholarship is issued to the recipient’s university account and can be used for tuition, books or other university expenses.

Mike is an avid outdoorsman. He participates in the GMFTR each year and even holds a rodeo record for swordfish. Mike and his family are honored for the opportunity to work so closely with the rodeo board this year and look forward to making the 2021 rodeo a success.

The 72nd Annual Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo will be held on Thursday, July 1st through Saturday, July 3rd, with fishing beginning at safelight on Thursday, July 1st. The tent and scales open on Friday and Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The mission of the Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo is to maintain the unique family-oriented sportsmen culture and heritage of Lafourche and Grand Isle through a community fishing rodeo, with proceeds dedicated to scholarships and educational opportunities for future generations.
