One man was killed and another is hospitalized after a Thursday morning fishing trip went awry in Golden Meadow.

Orand Terrebonne, 33, of 251 W. 223rd St., Golden Meadow, was killed after a boat owned by Simon Billiot, 32, sunk in a canal during a fishing trip.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Lesley Hill said Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol responded along with agents from the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Harbor Police shortly before 8:30 a.m., Thursday on a call that a sunken boat was found in Golden Meadow.

Within 45 minutes of finding the 14-foot aluminum flat boat underwater, Hill said they found Terrebonne’s body.

Around 2:30 p.m., crews were able to spot Billiot swimming in a canal that runs parallel to the canal where the boat was found. Hill said he was approximately three miles from shore and suffering from hypothermia and abrasions from walking on oyster shells.

Hill said Billiot told deputies he and Terrebonne had launched to go night fishing Wednesday night at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Hill said it is unclear exactly what happened to Billiot and Terrebonne and when. The investigation is being handled by Wildlife and Fisheries agents. The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Terrebonne to determine a cause of death.
