École Pointe-au-Chien, Louisiana’s sole Cajun and Indian French immersion school, and the only French immersion school in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, celebrated their official inauguration after opening their doors to students late this summer.

“We are so happy to see everyone here today,” began Will McGrew, President of the Board for École Pointe-au-Chien. “About two years ago, the Pointe-au-Chien Elementary School was closed and a lot of people said it would never open again. We are so grateful that, not only did we get our school reopened, but we were able to bring a French immersion school to the area. Thank you so much to everyone who made that possible.”

Following remarks from McGrew and Executive Director Christine Verdin, seven out of the nine kids currently attending École Pointe-au-Chien were able to show off their new language skills for the audience, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and a short song in French.

“It is a pleasure to be down here with you all again to celebrate the beginning of something that will be fantastic for this community and our state as a whole,” said Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. “As difficult as the struggle has been to open this school, we know how critically important projects like these are to keep our culture alive. These students learn French here, and go home to parents who don’t speak French– but their grandparents do. If we had gone one more generation without this school, it would be exponentially harder to hang onto our traditions– so I am very thankful for what everyone at École-Pointe-au-Chien is doing. Schools like this are how we ensure our future as a state.”

École Pointe-au-Chien currently boasts an unparalleled 2-1 student-teacher ration, fulfilling their mission of providing a high-quality public French immersion education grounded in unique Indian and Cajun French bayou culture for local students. École Pointe-au-Chien is a free public school, and they will be enrolling students throughout the entire school year.
