A Gray man flashed his headlights to get a driver to pull over late Sunday only to rob him at gunpoint, according to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Capt. Malcolm Wolfe said detectives arrested Nicholas Harris, 21, 409 Champion St., around 11:10 p.m. Sunday after receiving a dispatch describing his vehicle.

Minutes earlier, Harris allegedly pulled behind a vehicle and flashed the headlights of his grey Toyota Tundra at another driver, signaling him to pull over, Wolfe said. The driver complied, pulling off on a secluded part of West Park Avenue just north of Coteau Road, the spokesman said. When the driver exited his vehicle and approached Harris, Wolfe said the Gray man pointed a handgun at him and demanded money.

The victim ran back to his vehicle and sped away, notifying the sheriff’s office afterward, Wolfe said.

A deputy patrolling the area responded to the call. When he pulled Harris over on a traffic stop at the intersection of West Main Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard, Wolfe said the deputy found a handgun inside the car.

Harris was charged with attempted armed robbery and illegal carrying of a weapon. He remains at the Terrebonne Parish Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond, which was set by state District Judge David Arceneaux.

“Before you pull over, we encourage people to go to a police station, a fire station, a convenience store n any well-lit area where the public is present,” Wolfe said. “This was a case where (Harris) got his victim to pull over in a dark, fairly secluded area and convinced him to pull over.”
