Floodwater inundated Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes on Friday as thunderstorms swept through the area, dropping heavy rainfall on already saturated ground and causing road closures in Houma.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for north central Terrebonne Parish and Lafourche Parish, including Thibodaux, from 2:20 until 4:15. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain are possible in the area, according to the NWS.

The warning was extended until 4:45 p.m. for north central Lafourche Parish. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall, as thunderstorms producing heavy rain are anticipated to reach Des Allemands at about 3:25 p.m, according to the NWS.

In Lafourche Parish, public works employees are assessing flood concerns and handing out sandbags. As of 2:30 p.m., the parish had not reported any flooded homes, and approximately 300 sandbags had been given out, Lafourche Parish Government spokesman Logan Banks said.

Locally, thunderstorms pounded the low-lying areas of Lafourche this morning before making their way into central Terrebonne Parish.

Kerry Babin, director of public works in Lafourche, said the Galliano field office reported an unofficial total of 8 inches of rain on Friday. Galliano streets were submerged this afternoon, but officials aren’t yet sure of any home flooding, partly because the heavy rainfall occurred while so many people were at work.

“It’s a good thing it doesn’t rain that hard that often around here,” Babin said. “It was so much rainfall in such a short time.”

Lafourche public works employees are checking culverts and catch basins to ensure debris doesn’t stymy rainwater drainage.

“We’re anticipating what the Weather Services calls for, 1 to 3 inches, but in any area at any time you can get 3 to 5 inches in a downpour,” Babin said.

The weather took a turn for the worse in Houma around midday with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Locals took to Facebook to post pictures of submerged vehicles along Martin Luther King Jr. and Westside boulevards.

As of 2:30, the following roads in Terrebonne Parish were closed: Jean Street, Central Boulevard, Hollywood Road, Corporate Drive, Enterprise Drive, Broadmoor, San Antonio, Duet Street, Ann Carol Street, Douglas Drive, St. Charles Street, North French Quarter, Tunnel Boulevard (Polk to Tunnel), Capital Boulevard, Venture Boulevard, Lisa Park, Louis Drive, Lynwood Drive in Summerfield, South Hollywood Road at Martin Luther King Drive, Levron Street and Chantilly Lane.

More rain could be in store this evening for Thibodaux, according to the NWS. As of 4:40, the city was reporting standing water in some streets but no flooded homes or power outages, spokesperson Monique Crochet said.

A truck is submerged Friday near Walmart on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Houma. Parts of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are under a flash flood warning through 4:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
