State police arrested a Houma woman Sunday after anonymous callers tipped police that she was the driver of the vehicle that ran off La. 182, struck a local man and fled the scene the day before.

The 2001 Mazda Tribute driven by Brandy Billiot, 23, of Aubin Court, left the highway and struck Hector Morales, 58, also of Houma, as he walked along the shoulder of the road near Holiday Motel around 4 p.m. Saturday, according to state police.

Witnesses told state police Billiot’s car reentered the road after striking Morales and left the scene.

Acadian Ambulance transported Morales to Terrebonne General Medical Center where he later died, state police said.

Based on callers’ tips, state police arrested Billiot. She has been charged with vehicle homicide, hit and run driving and improper lane usage.

The investigation is ongoing, state police said.
