Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal came to Houma Monday to announce Performance Energy Services’ expansion to the Port of Terrebonne.

The Houma oilfield services company, established in 2000, is leasing 12 acres from the port to construct a 350-foot slip and a 4,500-ton dry dock. The project, a $26 million investment, is expected to create 350 jobs and retain 800 jobs.

Work will begin later this year, said CEO Ricky LaGrange.

“We work hard to bring outside companies to the state,” Jindal said. “But most new jobs are created by companies already here … Performance Energy shows that.”

The new facility at the port will also bring in business from outside Louisiana such as from Africa and the Bahamas, the governor said. The state has specifically targeted tax incentives for business development, he said, praising Terrebonne Parish officials’ use of the Enterprise Zone and Economic Development Award incentive programs.

Performance Energy will receive $1.7 million in rebates. “We have worked on this project with many local and state officials and are very pleased to see all of the hard work result in a positive change in Louisiana, creating more jobs and helping the state and local economy,” LaGrange said in a release.

Speaking on the stimulus package, Jindal said the federal government should use tax incentives for business instead of giveaways and bailouts. The governor also noted the passing of Rouses Markets’ founder Anthony Rouse, who died March 5.
